Abstract This study provides the first comprehensive report on mass concentrations of particulate matter of various sizes, inorganic and organic gas concentrations monitored at three sampling sites in the city of Palermo (Sicily, Italy). It also provides information on the water-soluble species and trace elements. A total of 2054 PM10 (1333) and PM2.5 (721) daily measurements were collected from November 2006 to February 2008. Particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters lower than 10 µm, (PM10) aerosol samples were collected during summer 2013 within the framework of the Chemistry and Aerosol Mediterranean Experiment (ChArMEx) at two sites located north (Capo Granitola) and south (Lampedusa Island), respectively, of the main Mediterranean shipping route in the Straight of Sicily. Aims: To verify the possible correlation between exposure to airborne particulate matter the average size less than 10 μm (PM 10) of a group of newsagents working in kiosks in Palermo and evidence of carotid intimal thickening. Materials and methods: data were collected relating to environmental monitoring of airborne pollutants. We have selected a sample of newsagents, who were submitted to some clinical investigations, including the carotid echo-color doppler examination. Modelling PM10 is an important problem in statistical methodology, above all to explain the PM10 behaviour in space and time, since it has been linked to many adverse effects on human and environmental health. But the large spatial variability of the main traffic-related pollutants, and in particular here the PM10, implies the impossibility of obtaining from the data of the fixed stations a complete pictures of the atmospheric pollution in the urban areas. Maģistra darbā pētīts cementa ražošanas tehnoloģiju radītais gaisa piesārņojums un tā izplatība SIA „Cemex” rūpnīcas teritorijā, Brocēnos, kur cementa ražošanā pašlaik izmanto sausā procesa tehnoloģiju. Lai gan sausā procesa tehnoloģiskie risinājumi ir energoefektīvāki un videi draudzīgāki, ražošanas procesa rezultātā rodas būtisks cieto daļiņu piesārņojums. Pētījuma ietvaros veikts pilns cieto daļiņu novērtējuma cikls – emisiju aprēķini, piesārņojuma izkliedes modelēšana un modelēšanas rezultātu validācija izmantojot cieto daļiņu mērījumus.
